What Is in Your Hand? From Common Wood to the Rod of God | The Morning Prayer Altar

The Minstrel’s Note

When Moses stood before the burning bush at Mount Horeb, God didn't ask him to invent a new weapon—He asked, "What is that in your hand?" (Exodus 4:2). A common piece of dry wood, an instrument of daily labor in the wilderness, became the very Rod of God that divided the sea when it was yielded to the altar. At the Morning Prayer Altar, we bring whatever we carry—our voices, our instruments, our ordinary routines—and lay them at the feet of Jesus. When the holy flame touches the surrendered tool, the natural breaks open into the miraculous.

Selah Series: Prophetic Architecture

Geometric stained-glass prophetic art by Jay Sandifer featuring a central unconsumed burning flame seated above a golden vessel, flanked by shepherd staffs, desert dunes, and Mount Horeb landscapes, with the Hebrew and English words for Selah and the scripture citation Exodus 4:2.
Exodus 4:2: 'What is that in your hand?' The fire of the altar meets the surrendered tool of the shepherd.

What Is in Your Hand?

“The Lord said to him, ‘What is that in your hand?’ He said, ‘A staff.’” — Exodus 4:2
  • Step 1: The Wilderness & The Mountain (Outer Quadrants) Trace the outer landscape sections—the desert sands of Midian on the left and the rugged heights of Mount Horeb on the right. Recognize that God meets you right in the middle of your daily routine and wilderness season.
  • Step 2: The Shepherd’s Staff (The Framing Border) Follow the carved wooden staff curving along the inner square. God took an ordinary, dry piece of wood—Moses’ instrument of labor and identity—and commanded it to be cast down. Ask yourself: What natural ability or assignment am I holding onto that must be surrendered to the altar?
  • Step 3: The Selah Center & The Holy Flame Fix your gaze upon the central flame rising from the golden vessel, flanked by the Hebrew and English SELAH (Pause and Praise). The fire does not consume; it empowers. The same staff surrendered to God becomes the Rod of God that parts the sea.
  • Step 4: The Altar Proclamation Look directly at the base scripture Exodus 4:2, breathe deeply, and declare aloud:
"I lay down my natural strength. What is in my hand belongs to the Lord. Ignite my calling with holy fire, break every yoke, and let Your power be displayed through my life."
